History

The Federal Agency for Water Management was founded in 1995, as an integration of the four Agencies ‘Federal Agency for Water Ecology, Fisheries and Lake Research’, ‘Federal Agency for Land and Water Management Research’, ’Federal Agency for Water Quality’ and ’Federal Agency for Hydraulic Engineering and Calibration of Hydrometrical Current Meters’.

It is part of the Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism. In 2003 the ‘Institute for Ecology and Aquaculture’ joined the Agency to add aquaculture to the expertise of the Agency. After several steps of reorganisation the Federal Agency for Water Management today consists of the Institute for Water Ecology, fisheries and Lake Research, the Institute for Land and Water Management Research and the Institute for Hydruaulic Engineering and Calibration of Hydrometrical Current Meters, headed by the Directorate in Scharfling/Mondsee.
