    The topics of water ecology are fish and their habitat of running waters. Flood protection and the use of hydropower have significantly changed our rivers inducing habitat alterations relevant to fish communities over long distances. With the aim of improving the ecological status of water bodies in Austria, water bodies are monitored, management concepts are developed and experts are called in for water law procedures.

  • Fish culture and research

    Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector of food production at present. Without research and knowledge transfer for practice there will be no progress in aquaculture technologies. Our aim is to support Austrian aquaculture with new technologies and research data; we offer consultation as well as education and training. The fish farm Kreuzstein is specialized in the breeding of diverse fish species from egg to fingerling.

  • Tasks of the fish farm Kreuzstein

    Main tasks of the fish farm Kreuzstein lie in the artificial maturation of brood stock fish, the collection of gametes, the hatching of eggs and the rearing of fish larvae to fingerling size. Fish production covers two aspects, the on-growing of endangered and ecologically important fish species for restocking purposes and the production of aquaculture fish for private fish farmers.

    Waldviertel Ecological Station is the youngest department of the institute, situated in Lower Austria and surrounded by ponds. Our emphases are aquaculture in carp ponds and recirculation aquaculture systems, as well as implementing the EU Water Framework Directive.
