Competence Centre for Hydrometry

Reliable hydrometric measuring instruments and standardized measurement methods form the basis of quantitative hydrography. They are used to measure flow velocity in our streams. In combination with the cross-sectional area, discharge can be determined from these measurements.

The quality of our measurement data has a direct impact on the design of flood protection structures, the delineation of hazard zones, and much more.

In the department “Hydrometry”, flow velocity measuring devices have been in use since 1897. With our technical expertise, we primarily support the federal states in determining the discharges of their rivers and streams. As part of the current Hydrometry Competence Center project, the department’s portfolio is being expanded to include three additional thematic areas.

Regular comparison measurements

At a defined cross-section, measurements are carried out using different instruments to determine discharge. By comparing results, conclusions can be drawn about the quality of one’s own measurements as well as the functionality of the instruments used. Regular dates are offered for these comparison measurements, and the subsequent evaluation is carried out by the department.

ADCP regatta in March 2026. Around 70 participants and 30 ADCPs took part in the comparison measurements at the Danube Canal.

Training courses for discharge measurement

To ensure a high standard of discharge measurement data across Austria and to train new personnel in the use of instruments and methods, a basic course has been developed in cooperation with the hydrographic services. This course includes both a theoretical and a practical component, providing the knowledge required to determine discharge in water bodies.

The content is continuously updated and expanded in line with the latest findings in the field and practical requirements.

Building on this basic course, additional training sessions are planned to deepen knowledge of various measurement methods and to cover specialized applications.

The course “Hydrometry in Theory and Practice: Basic Course in Discharge Determination in open streams” was held for the third time at the beginning of 2026. 39 people have completed the course to date.

A platform for knowledge collection and information exchange

A platform enables the exchange of expertise and literature across institutions. It also provides an up-to-date overview of relevant standards for discharge determination.
