Groynes as hydraulic-engineering and ecological measures

Groynes as hydraulic-engineering and ecological measures – laboratory experiments for the development of guidelines for lower torrent stretches

“Within the scope of the recently developed co-operation between Torrent and Avalanche Control (Department for Ecology and Torrent Processes) and Federal Agency for Water Management (both Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism), laboratory experiments will be conducted focussing on the effects of groynes on a river. Based on the output of these experiments a guideline will be developed on how groynes are to be constructed in fluviatile torrents sloped between 2 and 7 %, on the one hand, to sustainably protect the river bank against bank erosion and, on the other hand, to efficiently direct and control the bed load transport. In addition, all measures too aim at ecological and structural improvements of the river.“
