Sebastian Rath was awarded the Kubiena Prize of the Austrian Soil Science Society at the Soil Cinema Day on 5 December 2023 in Vienna.
This was in recognition of his high-quality master's thesis, in which soil physics laboratory methods were further developed that can be used to analyse the so-called sponge city substrate. This is a combination of large stones and a fine substrate which holds water and nutrients, a mixture that poses particular challenges in terms of dimensions, preparation steps and measurement systems. In the course of the master's thesis, scientifically sound solutions to the open questions were developed on the basis of many individual tests in the soil physical laboratory in Petzenkirchen.
