On September 26, 2025, the Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrometry participated in the European Researchers’ Night 2025 in Graz, together with partner institutions from Styria.
Using morphological experimental flumes, visitors – especially children and young people – were able to experience firsthand how rivers work, how they change over time, and how nature-based solutions can contribute to effective flood protection.
In addition, the EU project LOCALIENCE was presented, which aims to develop an early-warning system for floods in the Sulm River catchment area in Styria. The project demonstrates how scientific research, stakeholder engagement, and nature-based approaches can work hand in hand to improve flood resilience in the region.
The event highlighted how important it is to inspire curiosity and awareness about water management, flood defence and the environment among young people.
