In June and July, the Institute for Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Management hosted the practice-oriented Modules 3 and 4 of the Fisheries Skilled Worker training.
Module 3 – Lake Fisheries (23 – 27 June 2025)
This week focused on the management of Austrian lakes. In small groups and together with experts from the Department of Lake Research, participants set gill nets, worked with fyke nets, and collected lake water samples. They gained fundamental skills in inland fisheries—from capture techniques and legal basics to the complex communities of a lake ecosystem. Particular attention was paid to algae, zooplankton, and macrophytes. A highlight was the visit to a commercial lake fishery, where the dependence of human use on the lake ecosystem became tangible. Teaching was delivered by experienced Institute for Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Management instructors with support from external experts.
Module 4 – Carp Pond Management and Recirculating Systems (7 – 11 July 2025)
The second block centered on carp pond management and high-tech RAS. Participants learned the essentials of pond operations: stocking, feeding, pond maintenance, and sustainability with regard to water and product quality. Beyond the main species carp, side species, aquatic plants, and overall pond biodiversity were addressed. Practical units on processing and marketing rounded off the carp component. The RAS segment provided insights into the function and challenges of warm-water systems; instructors from the “Ecological Station Waldviertel” focused in particular on system engineering, water chemistry, and production workflows.
The varied course days were delivered by our dedicated Institute for Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Management instructors and external lecturers (Austrian Federal Forests/ÖBf, Biofisch). The blend of theory, hands-on practice, and collaborative activities created a lively learning environment and successful knowledge transfer.
