News from the HOAL - Installation of a new H-Flume

Hydrological parameters have been recorded in the HOAL - the Hydrological Open-Air Laboratory - since the end of the Second World War. Since 2010, these measurements have been intensified and sensors have been installed at many points in the catchment area. In order to be able to precisely determine the inflow and outflow into and out of the Seitgrabenbach, so-called H-Flumes are installed at every spring and drainage, which measure the water level and water temperature.

The H-Flumes are made of stainless steel and have a pressure probe that measures the height of the water column. Calibration in the hydraulic engineering laboratory enables the flow rate in l/s to be determined via the height of the water.

Due to the significant increase in heavy rainfall in recent years, the capacity of the old measuring weir with a maximum of 65 l/s was no longer sufficient. For this reason, a new measuring weir with a maximum flow rate of 200 l/s was installed at this location at the beginning of May in order to be able to reliably record larger precipitation events in future.
