The Federal Agency of Water Management was represented with a contribution as part of the Perchtoldsdorfer Forschertage, an extracurricular support program for children interested in science. In a relaxed atmosphere, the young participants were able to discover scientific relationships in an exciting way by observing and experimenting.
An illustrative model of the importance of soil in urban areas was presented. The focus was on the influence of soil on the water cycle and why its function as a reservoir, filter and habitat is particularly important in cities when dealing with heavy rainfall and drought. The model was used to illustrate the effects of heavy rainfall events in urban areas in a way that even the youngest children could understand. The great interest and the many questions impressively showed how much environmental topics can fascinate children at an early age.
