At the Burgenland Pond Farming Day held in early September at the “INFORM” trade fair in Oberwart, the focus was on current challenges and practical solutions for pond farms and aquaculture operations. Approximately 32 participants took the opportunity to learn more and exchange ideas with experts.
Christian Bauer represented the Federal Office and explained the impacts of climate change on pond systems and the measures operations can take to respond. The discussion focused in particular on:
- Practical Adaptations: Possible measures for high water temperatures included shading the banks, cooler inflows, and—under certain conditions—aeration.
- Early measurement is crucial: The lowest oxygen levels often occur in the early morning hours. Therefore, regular measurements—ideally at the same time of day—are advisable.
- Heat and nutrients can promote blue-green algae blooms: These can not only be problematic for water quality but also lead to taste impairments and additional oxygen depletion as the algae die off.
- Respond promptly to oxygen deficiency: Feeding should be reduced or stopped, and fresh water should be added or aeration provided as needed.
Other presentations focused on cross-state consulting, beaver management at pond facilities, funding opportunities under the EMFAF, and current animal health programs for aquaculture.
To conclude, expert discussions provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and explore the topics discussed in greater depth together.
