As a result of heavy rainfall and periods of drought caused by climate change, flooding in small catchment areas in Lower Austria is becoming an increasing problem. For efficient flood protection, it is therefore important to aim for water retention and infiltration of the resulting runoff volumes instead of rapid drainage. As part of this project, the basics for figuring out how likely floods are to happen need to be figured out first.
Also, new design criteria for flood protection in the Weinviertel's pluvial catchment areas are needed. This way, retention basins can help improve the landscape's water balance with partial or even complete infiltration and also lead to more economical concepts. At the same time, decentralized small to micro retention basins and retention basins can make a positive contribution to the challenging situation of agricultural water supply in the Weinviertel region.
